What A Week

What a week I had. I blame the time change. I thought, based on a decent Monday, that I hadn’t been hit too hard by it, but Tuesday proved me wrong. It was one of those days. I woke up an hour late, totally screwed up the day of my daughter’s science show, my favorite necklace broke as soon as I arrived at school, I forgot my lunch, we had no less than three paint explosions and a gazillion moments of frustration when I had to answer questions I had already reviewed. Election Year Fatigue

I cannot wait for this election year to be over. Usually it’s all the attack ads that get to me, but those haven’t hit yet. What is really draining me is all the talk among my students, “Did you hear [student]? She said she’s moving to Canada if [candidate] becomes President!” or “We have to leave the county if [candidate] becomes President.” or “I hope [candidate] becomes President.” “No way, [candidate] is going to be President.” I mean, I’m happy to hear students are engaged in the process, but it saddens me to hear that many students feel unwanted, or worse, that many students are “supporting” candidates without fully understanding what it means. I know they’re just parrots of their parents, but to hear first graders, second graders, third graders argue about who would be the best President is bothersome. Continue reading

Kids Say the Darndest Things

A 6th grade student walks up to me, “I’m really good at guessing people’s weight.”

“Okay,” I reply.

She stares at me for a moment, then says, “I am. I’m really good at it.”

“Okay, go for it,” I say.

“What?”

“Go for it. Do me,” I challenge.

A little taken aback, she pauses for a moment, “Oh, okay, um…” She studies me, thoughtfully, then loudly she guesses, “145!”

“Humpf,” I scoff, “Nope!’

“Well,” she stammers, “I’m better at guessing kids’ weight, not adults.”

“Ohhh…” I say, “I see. Well, you were about 20 lbs off.”

“Like I said,” she explains, “I’m better with kids. I never would have guessed you weighed 165.”

This Week on Instagram

My photo-a-day challenge on Instagram has started with a bang. I am loving the photos from all of the participants. I’m thinking of doing some sort of Best of post or something. It’s not too late to join!

This Weeks Highs & Lows

  • We had an unexpected day off on Tuesday for the Primaries. Happy to have the day off, devastated by the results of Super Tuesday. Get it together, America! This is the future of our country, not the latest reality show.
  • Kind of off topic, but I picked up Kindergarten registration papers for my daughter. Nooooooo! It seems like only yesterday I was trying to figure out how to pump in between cleaning brushes and loading the kiln. *Sigh*
  • Snow days, delayed starts, early releases, assemblies and field trips have messed with my previously perfectly timed calendar. Which is why I found myself bouncing from painting to clay to oil pastels, back to clay, and then back to painting. It made for an exhausting day.
  • It’s bobblehead time! (again) The students are so excited to make these. My Kinders and first graders are already asking me if they’ll get to make them when they’re in second grade.

Totally Off-Topic

Guys. I am fearful for the future of our country. What. Is. Going. On. Here? I’m scared. I have so many thoughts and feelings about our Presidential candidates, I just, can’t. I can’t. And the thing that really gets me, is listening to my students talk about the candidates. Clearly they are repeating their parents opinions, I mean, what 1st grader is well versed in politics, but it is still sad. I have students who are afraid of having to leave the country if someone gets elected. It’s sad to think about how unwanted they must be feeling right now. How unwanted their parents are feeling. I’m sad, guys. I’m sad.

This Week’s High & Lows

      • We’re working on a school-wide art-based fundraiser right now, and while I have mixed feelings about it, it certainly does make planning and prepping SO easy. Which may explain this moment:

      • Another one of my students lost a parent this week. My heart breaks for these students who have to experience tragedy at such a young age.
      • I’m at that point in the school year when you start running out of basic supplies, like pencils and erasers, and you threaten your students and their first born child if they don’t respect the materials.

When I find the kid(s) who has been doing this to my pencils… #artteacherproblems

Small Scraps & Weekend Links athglitter.comThis Week’s Highs

  • Snow days. I have a love/hate relationship with snow days. I love the time at home with my daughter, but ugh, if they don’t throw a HUGE kink in school plans. But mostly, I love them. Show me a working adult who wouldn’t like a day or two off from work, guilt-free, and I’ll show you a liar, liar, pants-on-fire.
  • My students. Love them! They sure can get me down sometimes, but man if they can’t pick me up just as much. They’re funny, sweet, and their enthusiasm for art class makes me all warm and fuzzy.
  • My coworkers. Think what you will about me, but I actually love my coworkers. I am going through something at home that has really been wearing on me these past couple of weeks, and dang-it, if they haven’t been the most gosh darn supportive people. It’s good to know you have people on your side when you need a hug, or a shoulder to cry on.

This Week’s Lows

  • Students move away all the time in my neck of the woods, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t sad to see friends brokenhearted when one moves away.
  • Unfortunately, tragedy also strikes in these parts, as it does everywhere, and two of the sweetest girls unexpectedly lost their mother this week. My heart goes out to them.

Small Scraps & Weekend Links athglitter.comThings Students Say

  • At the end of each quarter, I have free choice day, mostly to give myself some time to finish up last minute grades, but also as a reward to the students for all their hard work during the quarter. My Kindergarten free choice day was delayed a couple of weeks, so they just had theirs today. After reviewing how free choice day works, I opened the floor up to questions. A quiet little girl raised her hand and asked, “are we doing this because you didn’t have anything planned for us?” Oh, sweetie, aren’t you just so precious.
